How to make a permanent Discord invite link that never expires

Create a Discord invite link that never expires on desktop or mobile, get a vanity URL, and fix the usual reasons an invite shows up as invalid.

5 min read

By default, a Discord invite link stops working after 7 days. That is fine for inviting a friend tonight, but not for the link in your YouTube description, your website or a server directory. A week later every visitor sees "Invite invalid" and you lose people without knowing it. Here is how to create a permanent Discord invite, step by step, and what to check when a link still breaks.

Before you start: do you have permission?

You need the Create Invite permission in the server. Owners and admins have it. If you are a moderator and the option is missing, ask an admin to enable it for your role, or to create the link for you.

Also decide which channel the invite should point to. New members land in that channel first, so pick a welcome or rules channel that everyone can see, not a staff-only or private channel.

How to make a Discord invite that never expires (desktop)

These steps work in the Discord desktop app and in the browser.

  1. Open your server and click the server name at the top left.
  2. Choose Invite People. (You can also right-click a channel and choose Invite People to point the link at that channel.)
  3. At the bottom of the dialog, click Edit invite link.
  4. Set Expire After to Never.
  5. Set Max Number of Uses to No limit.
  6. Leave Grant temporary membership turned off, otherwise people are removed when they go offline unless they get a role.
  7. Click Generate a New Link and copy it.

That link now works until someone deletes it or the server disappears.

How to make a permanent invite on mobile (iOS and Android)

The mobile app moves things around between versions, but the flow is the same.

  1. Open your server and tap the server name at the top of the channel list.
  2. Tap Invite.
  3. Open the link settings (shown as Edit invite link or a settings icon next to the link).
  4. Set the expiry to Never and max uses to No limit.
  5. Save, then copy or share the new link.

If you cannot see the link settings, your role probably lacks permission to change them. Try from the desktop app or ask an admin.

Vanity URLs: discord.gg/yourname

A vanity URL replaces the random code with a custom name, like discord.gg/yourserver. It is easier to remember and say out loud, and it never expires.

  • Vanity URLs are a perk of Boost Level 3. Discord may also offer them to some verified or partnered servers.
  • Set it in Server Settings, in the vanity URL section, once the perk is unlocked.
  • If your server drops below Level 3, the vanity URL can stop working. Keep a regular never-expiring invite as a backup and use that one in places you cannot easily update.

For most servers a normal permanent invite is all you need. A vanity URL is a nice extra, not a requirement.

Why temporary invites break directory listings

Server lists need a link that works for every visitor, for as long as the server is listed. If you submit a 7-day invite, the listing silently breaks a week later. People click Join, hit an error and move on to the next server.

That is why TopGuilds only accepts permanent invites. When you list a server, the invite is checked to make sure it points to that exact server and does not expire, and the directory keeps checking it so member and online counts stay accurate. You do not need a bot to list your server; you only need a never-expiring invite and the Manage Server permission. Read the listing guidelines before you submit.

The same logic applies everywhere you post your server: social bios, partner channels, video descriptions, forum signatures. Anything that stays online longer than a week should use a permanent link.

Troubleshooting: "Invite invalid" or "Invite expired"

If people report that your invite does not work, go through this list.

  1. The invite expired. Check its settings. If it was created with a time limit, make a new one with Expire After set to Never.
  2. It hit its max uses. A limit of 10 or 25 uses runs out quickly. Use No limit for public links.
  3. Someone deleted it. In Server Settings → Invites you can see active invites and who created them. Admins can revoke invites there, sometimes during a cleanup. Create a fresh link and update it everywhere.
  4. Invites are paused. Discord lets admins pause invites, for example during a raid. Existing links will not work until invites are resumed.
  5. The person is banned. A banned account cannot join through any invite. That is expected.
  6. The vanity URL was lost. If boosts dropped below Level 3, the custom link may no longer resolve. Switch to a regular permanent invite.
  7. The server hit Discord's member limit or was deleted. Rare, but both stop invites from working.

Quick checklist for a permanent invite

  • Expire After: Never
  • Max Number of Uses: No limit
  • Grant temporary membership: off
  • Points to a public welcome or rules channel
  • Tested in a private browser window or from an alt account

Once you have the link, save it somewhere your team can find it and treat it as the official one.

A permanent invite is the foundation of every other promotion step. With one in hand, you can list your server on TopGuilds for free, browse community servers to see how other owners present themselves, and follow our guide on how to grow your Discord server.
